Disney Tsum Tsum from the Disney Store vs Tsum Tsum made by Posh Paws from Clinton's Cards (UK)

Here I am going to make a comparison of Tsum Tsum produced to be sold at Disney Stores and Tsum Tsum produced to be sold at Clinton's Cards. Those who are new to Tsum Tsum or very OCD about the appearance of their Tsums may be interested in the information below. :)

I also understand that they are being sold at 'Target' Stores in the US and these may have similar  variations to what I am about to show you.

The basics:

  • Clintons' (and possibly Argos and Toys R Us) sell Tsum Tsum made by the UK toy manufacturer 'Posh Paws'. This is a toy company that has a license to reproduce Disney characters.
  • Disney Store sells Tsums made by their own manufacturer. They obviously keep the name to themselves!

Pluto (these photos are my own):

Here are two Pluto tsums side by side. The Disney Store version is on the left, and the Clintons on the right. Notice how the Pluto on the left is flatter and more squat and the one on the right is taller and narrower. This is because the Posh Paws variations tend to contain more stuffing than the Disney Store Tsums. Hence, the Posh Paws Tsums do not stack as well. This is found across their whole range.

The next main differences are the eyes and the nose. The eye positioning tends to be further apart on Posh Paws Tsums and the sizes are noticeably different. Right Pluto's snout is more prominent and pushed in whereas left Pluto's is rounded into his shape.

The next difference can only be seen with the Tsums that have tails (this is a minor one really). Disney Store tsums' tails are made of a thinner thread of an almost elastic property compared to the thicker and sometimes longer length of thread the Posh Paws use.

Onto the tags. This will happen in all toy variations to distinguish between two manufacturers.

The Clintons tsums' tags are smaller (which personally I prefer, because why do they need tags which are bigger than the bottom of the tsum?!) As they are made by Posh Paws, each have a hologram and code to show they are licensed to produce Disney characters- plus they are recognised as 'official' merchandise. Helpfully, the Clintons tags state the character's name along with the barcode which is something I'd like on the Disney Store Tsums... they do it in Japan so why not in the UK or US?

The Clintons' material tags also have Posh Paws' logo on, European safety mark and age suitability.

I quite like the Clintons tags as they're no frills and don't get in the way whilst stacking Tsums.

And here is the common Disney Store Tsum tag variation. (There are some UK tsums with smaller tags- I'll post this in a separate guide). The material tags also show the Disney Store authenticity stamp. This is found on anything purchased at a Disney Store of Disney Park. As the tag is so big there are a few photos! :)

Top view of the two Plutos. The animals with collars or any necklaces often, even on Disney Store Tsums, are not completely lined up on either side. In this case Clintons' Tsum wins!

Other differences?

  • Disney Store Tsums are softer and squashier (I like to use them as stress relievers sometimes).
  • Posh Paws Tsums tend to be more inconsistent with the differences. My Pluto has obvious 'defects' but they're not all like this; the Posh Paws ones are nice in a lot of cases, especially the Winnie the Pooh ones- I think they've been made the best. If you spend time picking out the best ones- in some cases you barely notice the differences unless you've got a Posh Paws and a DS tsum side by side.
Here are some more noticeable differences. These photos are courtesy of Jenny Willmin, who posted these in the group 'Disney Tsum Tsum Community UK'. Thanks for letting me use them! Again, Disney Store Tsums are on the left and Clintons on the right.

So, all in all, some Posh Paws Tsums have noticeable differences and are a bit uglier than Disney Store Tsums (not always, but a lot of people say the same!). However, since I am not overly picky I'd be happy to buy from either shop especially when Clinton's releases previously sold out DS Tsums because this way you don't have to pay ridiculous prices on e(vil)Bay. If you're into Tsums for their resale value I'd say from what I have seen the Posh Paws ones go for far less because they aren't official official Disney merchandise in a lot of people's minds.

Prices

At time of writing (07/08/15):

Disney Store £3
Clintons £3 (although I have heard through Facebook groups they are up to £3.50 now in some shops!)
Toys r Us £4.99 (what?!)
Argos £3.99
Smyths Toys £4.99

I have also seen them in Toy Planet in the Intu (formerly Westfield) Centre Derby for £3 but they aren't made by posh paws oddly.

Thanks for reading and if you're new to tsums or just pondering why they may seem different I hope this has helped!

  1. Thanks, good to know, I didn't even realise they were made by different companies until recently when we bought a few at Disneyland and noticed the tag difference, I just assumed they were all the same. Think I'll stick to Disney Store ones now, seeing as they are cheaper too.

    1. Glad you found the info useful, there will be slight variations between all of the tsums even when made by the same manufacturer as I imagine a lot of their details are hand stitched etc :)although you do get some disneyland exclusives like Duffy and Shellie May so it's worth getting them, but others yes it's better if you can get them at the disney store due to the difference in price! :)
